With a traditional mechanical watch, torque from the gear train is sent to the escapement. The escapement serves two purposes: it powers the balance, causing it to oscillate, and it locks/unlocks the gear train, thereby controlling the flow of time.

The Spring Drive system is pretty ingenious. Some of the torque from the mainspring is sent to a "trisynchronous regulator", a component that converts mechanical energy into electrical energy, which is then sent to a crystal oscillator (quartz). The oscillator then sends a signal to an electromagnetic brake, which in turn controls the "pulley". The latter wheel spins eight times per second, controlling the flow of time. The advantage of the Spring Drive system is that it offers much higher precision than conventional Swiss lever escapements. Grand Seiko has launched two models at Watches & Wonders, which share the same specs except for the dial. The Grand Seiko SBGE283 has a glossy black dial, while the SGBE285 has a light gray textured dial. It is this latter reference that I choose to focus on below.

The hour and minute hands are in the "Evolution 9" style and at first glance they look similar to the hands on the SLGH002. Look closer, however, and you'll notice they're lined with "Lumibrite," a treatment designed to enhance readability in dim light. The noon index is double-wide to distinguish it from the other hour scales.
